Restore website configuration using the corrupt Metabase.bin
Problem
1. Windows 2000 IIS 5.0 manager cannot be opened.
2. WWW services cannot be started.
3. Error message states that "the handle is invalid"
Cause
The Metabase.bin which has IIS configuration information is corrupted.
Resolution
01. Connect to the problem Windows 2000 server.
02. Backup the Metabase.bin from the path C:\WINNT\System32\Inetsvr.
03. Reinstall all the IIS components.
04. Connect to any Windows 2003 server.
05. Install and open metabase explorer.
06. Import the backed up Metabase.bin to the Metabase explorer (Click on Metabase and select Import Key).
07. Select OK to ignore Secure records.
08. Archive (Metabase.bin) will appear.
09. Connect to the problem server from the Metabase explorer.
10. Problem server name (<servername>) will appear.
11. Under Archive (Metabase.bin) expand LM - W3SVC - select the Key (1, 2 or 3) and Ctrl + C to copy the key
12. Under Problem server (<servername>) expand LM - Right click W3SVC and select paste.
13. Now open IIS manager on the problem server and you will see the web site with all configuration.
